39

June 18, 2024 by Simon Robinson 1 Comment

My mother (91) expressed her frustration with the number of immigrants working in her nursing home. I reminded her that both of her children were emigrants not émigrés; that on arriving elsewhere, we became economic immigrants; that all five of her grandchildren were born elsewhere; that they inherited the opportunities of dual nationality.

“It’s not the same thing at all” she said dismissively.

Sloane Square Breakfast

February 3, 2021 by Simon Robinson Leave a Comment

If you visited with us over a weekend while we lived in London, it’s likely that you joined us for breakfast in Colbert. It’s a restaurant that we often visited for breakfast but never went at any other meal times.

Full Circles

January 15, 2021 by Simon Robinson Leave a Comment

I posted several photos to Instagram the other day. I decided on a theme: What is Red? My posts were in response to an ‘invitation’ to share red coloured photos with #capturecolors and @captureonepro in the captions of my posts. I thought to limit my post to photos taken in Ireland in 2020 and found six I liked. Submissions closed today and three Fuji cameras await the the best pictures posted with those tags.

Gingko Shot

November 25, 2020 by Simon Robinson Leave a Comment

This is the third ‘shot’ in three days and it comes from a London street. There’s a magnificent Ginko Biloba on Greencoat Place in Westminster that I watched for weeks until the leaves were right. Then the sun had to be right and I waited a day or two more. And so, at 11:05:42 this day last year I was standing beneath a yellow bough that is just higher than the single decked buses that pass three or four times an hour.

On Chess and Cakes

September 24, 2020 by Simon Robinson Leave a Comment

The doorbell rang. Standing there, masked, was a highly ranked chess player. He was delivering a plated lemon drizzle cake. Almost surreal except that his very good wife had made it for us as a diversion from worrying about our daughter going through surgery at the time the cake arrived.

I searched my iPhone database for today’s date 0924

A Week In Three Photos

July 30, 2020 by Simon Robinson Leave a Comment

The summer weather has not been kind here in Dublin. In a mock despair, we ended up doing a jigsaw puzzle on the kitchen table while it lashed rain. The puzzle took several days and it made an interesting photographic challenge once completed. How do you make a jigsaw interesting but different to the picture on the box? There are hundreds of ways but I wanted to do it with a tilt-shift adaptor on a 50 mm manual lens. I really like this photo with a focal emphasis on two tourists in front of an iconic London bus. It was raining there too.
