Free Associations

October 8, 2020 by Simon Robinson Leave a Comment

Isn’t it ironic that my brain started making it’s own free associations at a time that social free association is proscribed?

It started again when there came a pier walk first thing this morning. And with that came a waft of stale urine from long closed public conveniences.

Rosmeen

October 7, 2020 by Simon Robinson 2 Comments

‘Rosebud’ was an enigma: the dying word of Citizen Kane, finally explained at the end of the film. Similarly, there was a Rosmeen question that came to be resolved shortly before our father died. As Orson Welles wrote in 1975, denying that his Kane character was modelled on media tycoon Randolph Hearst ‘There are parallels, but these can be just as misleading as comparisons.’

Nine Years On

October 5, 2020 by Simon Robinson 1 Comment

It’s a shame that not everyone has the opportunity to visit New Zealand. Sometimes, our planets align and there are multiple reasons to do something. Let’s face it, visiting the other side of this planet requires unusual alignments.

Overlooked Variables

October 4, 2020 by Simon Robinson 2 Comments

The story of K. This Overlooked Variable Is the Key to the Pandemic is an excellent informative read. Go to The Atlantic and read what Zeynep Tufekci had to say on September 30. And perhaps read her many other articles since the pandemic hit.

The spiders remind us of hidden dangers at our rarely used front door.

Sea and Light

Mariner's Church, Dun Laoghaire. Reflection in a puddle by the seaside.
Sea and light.
Mariner’s Church, Dun Laoghaire.

The day started with a walk. The church spire reflected in a puddle seemed painterly. No longer a church, it is somewhat diminished if described as the maritime museum spire reflected in a puddle. A building in which we have attended civil wedding ceremonies that are enriched by the maritime icons that symbolise journeys of hope in this life rather than what many see as the cruel and debasing imagery of the supplanted Christian ethos.

On Harvest and Blue Moons

October 1, 2020 by Simon Robinson Leave a Comment

I will be very disappointed tonight. I already see that the Harvest Moon will not be visible at moonrise from South County Dublin at 1930 local time. The skies have clouded over and that’s it for this moon. It will rain instead.
