List

March 10, 2021 by Simon Robinson Leave a Comment

I could tell you a story or two to explain why I’ve not been posting journals for a few weeks. Instead, I’ll tell you that I’ve been occupied on my next chapbook project. I’ve been consumed by what I needed to learn in order to make it worth doing.

Looking into the past from today to Petra this day 2005.

Grievable Pigs

March 6, 2021 by Simon Robinson Leave a Comment

There may be a photo out there somewhere of me sitting by a deer, holding the rifle I used to shoot it dead. That’s because I was brought up as a hunter and such a photo would have been a trophy. In truth, my family started my hunting early.

My preferred trophy: Andrew Carnegie donated the 1905 cast of the Diplodocus skeleton to the Natural History Museum in London and I was lucky enough to dine beneath it several times.

Volcanoes and Cars

March 3, 2021 by Simon Robinson 2 Comments

There was another volcanic episode in the news this evening. Mt Etna has been active in Sicily for weeks but now, Mount Sinabung in Sumatra is back in the news too. It’s been blasting volcanic ejecta five kilometres into the sky for a few days. The ash rains back down as choking, abrasive dust. That might seem awful but it’s relatively good news if you live beside an active volcano on The Ring of Fire.

1996 Memory

February 21, 2021 by Simon Robinson Leave a Comment

The Porteño taxi driver surprised me several times. He smiled and whispered affectionately as he moved the small dog across to steer the car. The terrier had been whimpering, seeking attention as we zipped through Buenos Aires traffic. The smell in the car was also surprising. The windows were open because of the heat and the interior was decorated with toilet bowl fresheners. Pine and lavender as I recall, six clipped to doors and seats that I could see.

Yearning for the traffic-free safety of Patagonia!

Kenning

February 18, 2021 by Simon Robinson Leave a Comment

We went to see The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover in The Landmark Theatre in Greenway Plaza in Houston. That was in 1989 and the Greenway Plaza was then the home of the NBA’s Houston Rockets. The cinema was more arthouse than mainstream which explains how we saw a Greenaway movie in a Greenway cinema in a place then better known for basketball. Romantic crime drama with cannibalism – just the thing for a brief respite from parenting when we parked our kids with the 5Es for a few hours (a great family with five kids whose names started with E).

The tower, the bathers, the isle and the freighter.
Yesterday, James Joyce’s Martello Tower, the Forty Foot bathers, the Muglins and passing freighter.
