Why Did Mary Robison Ever?

March 26, 2021 by Simon Robinson Leave a Comment

Yesterday was the last day of my month of magnolias. Lucky that because today, the gusts, hail and sleet are doing their best to knock the tepals to the ground. So I spent the day indoors, desk bound while preparing the next chapbook.

And then I finished reading Mary Robison’sWhy Did I Ever? I don’t read much fiction but if I did, I’d want it to be as refreshing as this. It was an experience rather than a story. I engaged with it from page one, became immersed and was held in thrall to the last page.

Yes, the weather has changed.

Trees, Power and Ship

March 16, 2021 by Simon Robinson Leave a Comment

I was sent home by the police recently. I was stopped at a road block and in truth, I couldn’t justify my travel as essential. I explained that I was less than 5 km from home and that I was headed for a walk in order to take photographs of trees for an upcoming book. ‘That’s hardly essential work’ he said while his colleague was clearly issuing a fine to the driver ahead of me.

‘I’ll go home then’

Magnolia 377

March 12, 2021 by Simon Robinson Leave a Comment

The Southern Magnolia aka Magnolia grandiflora and I’ve located one so far. Oh, but you don’t know what I mean even though you guessed from the title that this is journal #377.

March, being the month of magnolias, will be marked this year by my challenging myself to make a chapbook of magnolia photos. Magnolia will be the next photozine from Bracket Books Ireland.

Stardate 74628 or 47634.44

Everyone’s calendars are relative to a starting point. It’s been a year since I started this journal so it’s Journalday 365 today. Trekkies might date it as 74628 despite the fictitious origins. Then again, Star Trek on TV (74628) isn’t on the same calendar as the game played as Star Trek Online (47634). Parallax takes many forms.

Two garden shots from this morning’s search for magnolias.

The Garden Issued

February 26, 2021 by Simon Robinson Leave a Comment

Chapbook or photozine? I wish I’d thought of calling them the former before I started publishing photozines. And I wish we’d thought to set up Bracket Books Ireland long before now. Either way, we intend to fail better next time.

Garden went into the post-office yesterday. It’s the second book, the February edition, for the current subscribers. I’d anticipated the pandemic-slowed postal services would make local deliveries on March 1st. It seems that nothing is predictable and miraculously, some arrived today.

Garden Photozine

February 20, 2021 by Simon Robinson Leave a Comment

A Chinese proverb says all gardeners know better than other gardeners.

All I know is that gardens are sources of wonderment in all seasons, sites and scales.
