I had lunch in Samy’s Curry Restaurant in Singapore on March 1st, 1993. I know because I found an old diary that records how I was entertained to a meal in the legendary curry house. A former boss decided to mark a work anniversary with a celebratory meal. He was a serious cheapskate at the best of times but his masterly choice of venue meant I had an unforgettable experience.

Many say that the Irish coastline is about 3,200 km long. Others believe it to be perhaps 6,347 km. Or maybe it’s closer to 16,000 km. Distance perception was on my mind as I was photographing the Muglins and Kish Lighthouses yesterday because The Kish lighthouse always seems relatively near on a clear day.

It’s been time to paint the inside of the house. Linear measures, height by breadth give the area and from that you need to estimate the volume of paint. The realities of inexperience regarding surface absorption rates kicks in. One litre covered four square metres of a garden shed last year. One litre of varnish did two coats of a bench. One litre of undercoat will cover fifteen square metres inside the house.
