Diary: Burma Story Two

January 29, 2021 by Simon Robinson Leave a Comment

I found an old diary that’s reminded me of many experiences in Burma. Among the notes, I found pointers to three enduring stories not yet retold in these journals.

Diary: Singapore 1993

January 27, 2021 by Simon Robinson Leave a Comment

I had lunch in Samy’s Curry Restaurant in Singapore on March 1st, 1993. I know because I found an old diary that records how I was entertained to a meal in the legendary curry house. A former boss decided to mark a work anniversary with a celebratory meal. He was a serious cheapskate at the best of times but his masterly choice of venue meant I had an unforgettable experience.

A ‘wet’ market I visited in Singapore 1993.

Fractals and Lighthouses

January 26, 2021 by Simon Robinson Leave a Comment

Many say that the Irish coastline is about 3,200 km long. Others believe it to be perhaps 6,347 km. Or maybe it’s closer to 16,000 km. Distance perception was on my mind as I was photographing the Muglins and Kish Lighthouses yesterday because The Kish lighthouse always seems relatively near on a clear day.

Life Long Suffering

I recently mentioned being stopped by the police on Baggot Street in Dublin. It’s happened again.

Repurposed old iron nails and life long suffering, themes that complement each other.

Paint: One Thought Leads To Another

January 23, 2021 by Simon Robinson 1 Comment

It’s been time to paint the inside of the house. Linear measures, height by breadth give the area and from that you need to estimate the volume of paint. The realities of inexperience regarding surface absorption rates kicks in. One litre covered four square metres of a garden shed last year. One litre of varnish did two coats of a bench. One litre of undercoat will cover fifteen square metres inside the house.

How much paint should we buy?
Noticed on a walk across the South Downs in 2010.
