Gallery: Machine Driven

Some say that See/Saw is an illuminating history of how photographs frame and change our perspectives. Geoff Dyer certainly inspired me and my collaborator.

I wasn’t sure how to attribute credit for the pictures that ‘seeded’ those selected for my chapbook. The author had used appropriately credited versions in his book but I failed to contact the author through the publisher. So I created this gallery explaining the relevance to me of the pictures selected for this month’s edition. I included some links (click LOCATOR) to sites where the digital versions of the ‘seeding’ images can be seen as presented by the rights’ owners.

I was rereading Geoff Dyer’s fascinating essay collection See/Saw when its subtitle stimulated a question. Which of these images would a computer like if it was ‘Looking at Photographs’? My computer is already involved in photo management, development and chapbook layout so why not have it make the selections for once? And so I ‘invited’ my desktop computer to collaborate for this edition.

Apertures

This month’s pictures are of openings into the opening that is the aperture in the lens’s diaphragm as seen by the lenses between the camera and the mind’s eye. Each is a kind of three-for-one and many include an element of the fourth dimension, time travel. And like coins, there are potential dark reverse interpretations.

Limerick Walls

Advance and Retire

Every stone and brick herein is a handstone, each a memorial to the smiths that shaped and placed them using skills honed over a millennium. Their work has withstood the tests of assaults, sieges, invasions and regeneration schemes. The craftsmens’ names may have been effaced by time but their legacy still supports and renders the city in good light.
